Roman Sainte-Colombe. An ancient district of Vienne frozen by fire
A river runs through it
The earliest buildings to get a foothold on the west bank of the Rhône created a mixture of public, private, and commercial space. It was a winning combination that would flourish -with the exception of occasional setbacks -from the Augustan period through into the 3rd century AD. At some point between AD 10 and 15, a period that saw the death of the elderly Augustus, a vast horreum or public warehouse was established directly on the riverside. Although only part of this complex was explored, it opened onto the Rhône and so was presumably intended to serve the ships plying this watercourse. In
