Tord Boontje
Tord Boontje is a Dutch-born product designer. After graduating from the Design Academy in Eindhoven, Boontje moved to London in to do an Industrial Design MA at the Royal College of Art. In he began tranSglass, a design collaboration with Emma Woffenden. Their objective is to embrace recycling, and they are keen to be in control of their own production process, for example using discarded wine and beer bottles spliced in different configurations to make new vessels. All products, vases, glasses and jugs are manufactured bygd the designers in their London-based studio.
Boontje also launched Rough and Ready, a collection of furniture made from easy-to-find wood and recycled materials, and made these designs available to anybody bygd freely providing blueprints of the designs, of which more than 30, have been distributed to date. This object is a paper template in the early stage of the design for the Midsummer light by Tord Boontje (). The light is constructed from two layers of Tyvek©, a highly resistant synthetic form of paper. The layers are made in contrasting colours and are protected from the heat of the bulb by a plastic (Mylar) cone. The object is sold in a flat pack and requires self-assembly.
Midsummer was a variation of an earlier design called Garland, which was mass-produced for Habitat and was their best selling product of (The original and the mass-produced version are both in the V&A Metalwork collection). Boontje noticed that most paper lamps are glued in some way and both Garland and Midsummer are novel in that they simply hang off their protective cone without the need for glue, thus making self-assembly less tiresome.
