Indian politician and Queen Consort of Patiala Household
Preneet Kaur (born 3 October 1944) is an Indian politician who served in the Government of India as a Minister of State in the Ministry of External Affairs from 2009 to 2014.[2] She is married to Amarinder Singh, who was the 15th Chief Minister of Punjab. She joined the Congress party, to which her husband also belonged once, and contested parliamentary elections repeatedly from the Patiala constituency. In February 2023, she was suspended from the party for supporting BJP leader and her husband Amarinder Singh and campaigning for candidates of the BJP or BJP-allied parties.[3][4] She won the elections of 1999, 2004 and 2009, but lost her seat in the elections of 2014 and made a comeback by winning again in 2019, only to lose again in 2024, finishing in third place.

She hails from Shimla, India, and was born into a Kahlon Jat Sikh family. Her father, Sardar Gian Singh Kahlon, was an esteemed officer in the Indian Civil Service. In October 1964, she married Capt. Amarinder Singh, the son and heir of the titelbärare Maharaja of Patiala.
Her political journey began with the Indian National Congress. She has been a formidable candidate from the Patiala constituency. Despite losing her seat in the 2014 elections, she made a triumphant return in 2019.
As a Minister of State in the Ministry of External Affairs, she significantly contributed to India’s utländsk policy. However, her political journey took a dramatic turn in February 2023 when she was suspended from the Congress party for supporting her husband, Amarinder Singh, a BJP leader.
She later left församling, joined BJP right before the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, and even contested the elections from Patiala on a later ticket. But she was unable to repeat her success.
