Sound Collage Enters the 21st Century
By 2002, sound collage was a well-oiled machine, driven by the practice of sampling. Even though only six years had passed since Endtroducing..., sampling already sounded much less like an experimental genre and more like a normal ingredient of conventional, popular music. So when rising DJ and producer RJD2 made the album Deadringer in the summer of '02, it was released into a much different musical climate than DJ Shadow's album was. While Endtroducing... was viewed as "music for the sake of sampling," Deadringer was recognized as simply "sampling for the sake of music." As one music reporter put it, "DJ Shadow may have started the...revolution, but RJD2 is here to make the coup a reality."
