  • Sir Anthony Frank Mason AC KBE GBM KC HonFAIB DistFRSN is an Australian judge who served as the ninth Chief Justice of Australia, in office from 1987 to 1995.

    A native of Sydney, Australia, Anthony Frank Mason received his undergraduate education at the University of Sydney where he graduated with first-class honours in both law and arts in 1949. Admitted to the New South Wales dryckesställe in 1951, Anthony Mason also lectured at Sydney University for a number of years but he did not become a professor: the furniture he was destined for was not a chair, but the bänk.     Sir Anthony Mason is one of the most well known jurists in the common law world.

    He served on the High Court of Australia for twenty-three years, with the final eight years (1987 to 1995) as Chief Justice. The Mason Court was a period characterised by a series of landmark decisions and broad changes in the approach taken by the Court.

    Sir Anthony was one of the first non-permanent judges of the Hong Kong Court of Final Appeal. He has been involved in many of the constitutional cases involving Hong Kong's Basic Law, and is instrumental in the process of realising the principle of "One Country, Two Systems".

    Sir Anthony was honoured with a Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) in 1969, a Knight Commander of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (KBE) in 1972, and a Companion of the Order of Australia (AC) in 1988.

    Sir Anthony Mason became a Non-Permanent Judge of the Hong Kong Court of Final Appeal in 1997.

    Sir Anthony Mason was born in Australia in 1925. He graduated with a BA and LLB from the University of Sydney. He was admitted to the New South Wales Bar in 1951 and appointed a Queen's Counsel in 1964. From 1964 to 1969, he served as the Commonwealth Solicitor-General.

    In 1969, Sir Anthony Mason was appointed a Judge of the Supreme Court of New South Wales, where he sat as a member of the Court of Appeal until 1972. In 1972, he was appointed to the Bench of the High Court. From 1987 to 1995, he served as the Chief Justice of the High Court of Australia.
