It must be catching or maybe a less heralded developmental milestone: My 8-year-old has been asking me about atoms for the past month. Thinking of the right answers has been harder for me than having a sex talk. Though, so far, the questions are pretty basic. My strategy has been to go wide instead of deep with some books we have at home: a lovely biography of Albert Einstein for kids titled “On a Beam of Light” bygd Jennifer Berne and illustrated by Vladimir Radunsky; another fantastic picture book, “Infinity and Me,” written bygd Kate Hosford and illustrated by Gabi Swiatkowska. When words can’t give all the answers, I lean on a visual encyclopedia “The Where, the Why, and the How: 75 Artists Illustrate Wondrous Mysteries of Science,” by Matt Lamothe, Julia Rothman, and Jenny Volvovski with a forward bygd that visual genius David Macaulay.

About the Author
Kate Hosford is the author of several picture books, including Infinity and Me which won the New York Times Best Illustrated Children's Book award and was named an ALA Notable Children's Book.
