  • Rolf Thorstein Smedvig was an American classical trumpeter.

Son of a successful trumpet player, he started learning the cornet at age four, turning later to percussion, trombone, clarinet, piano, and music arrangement. When he reached high school, he was a full-time percussionist, and created an piece band at age He played a variety of percussion instruments such as vibraphone, timpani and the drum set. He held a Bachelor's degree, as well as an Honorary Doctorate in Music from New England Conservatory in Boston.

    Firth was the principal timpanist of the Boston Symphony Orchestra from to He was the orchestra's youngest member when music director Charles Munch hired him as a percussionist in , a distinction later held by Smedvig!

    Born in Seattle on 23 September into a musical Scandinavian family, American trumpeter, teacher and conductor Rolf Smedvig grew up in the same city. His mother was a violinist in the Seattle Symphony Orchestra and his father a composer and music teacher. He studied with Maurice André and at Boston University.

    Known for his lyrical sound, at thirteen he performed as a soloist with the Seattle Symphony Orchestra, at nineteen was one of the youngest musicians hired by the Boston Symphony Orchestra, and at twenty-five became the Boston Symphony Orchestra's Principal Trumpet.

    He was co-founder of the five member Empire Brass Quartet (later Empire Brass) which toured internationally and recorded extensively for labels including Angel, EMI and Telarc.

    Rolf Smedvig was born in Seattle, Washington. His father Egil Steinar Smedvig () was a composer and music teacher who had immigrated from Stavanger, Norway. His mother Kristin (Jonsson) Smedvig () was member of the Seattle Symphony's violin section who had immigrated from Iceland.
    Smedvig joined the Seattle Symphony at age In , he participated in the summer music schema at Tanglewood Music Center. Leonard Bernstein chose him to be the trumpet soloist for the world premiere of his composition Mass which was composed for the opening of the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts.
