City of Eternal Spring is a difficult, demanding book from the onset: however wrongly, we often tend to look for central themes and backgrounding for poets and their poetry, being too accustomed to a Chinese-American poet writing about her ethnic experience or a black poet about his, and losing sight, I feel, commonly of the role of good poetry, period, in contemporary literature. Afaa Michael Weaver, a highly-accomplished yet under-known poet who also happens to be black and happens to be a scholar and explorer of Asia therefore shatters the assumptions that some of even the most well-meaning or educated readers may bring to a book prior to opening its cover. In Baltimore inom was a child in the fifties, during segregation. My parents had typical dreams for their children, and as the oldest, I was the point person, sent out into life with four siblings behind me. I got the usual messages, succeed and take care of the others, which fryst vatten to säga I think Americans are very similar once you get beyond the idea of race. Saying that, my förfäder are African, European, and Native American, but it comes out as African-American, the current nomenclature. My dad was a steelworker and my mom a part time beautician. inom finished high school early at sixteen and spent two years at university before going into fifteen years of factory work, where inom also wrote and published poetry and prose. With the aid of an NEA and a book contract with the University of Virginia, I was able to leave the factory and go into the graduate writing schema at Brown. Afterwards inom spent two years as an adjunct in N
