Book review: ‘Steve Jobs’ by Walter Isaacson
Walter Isaacson’s biography of Steve Jobs is in some ways another product created from the mind of its subject. Though Jobs was insistent that he wouldn’t interfere with the writing of the book (and in fact he seems not to have read any part of it), he hand-picked Isaacson to lay down his legacy for all to see. Why he chose him is not surprising: Isaacson’s biographies of Benjamin Franklin and Albert Einstein are engrossing, epic, and readable studies of men who changed history. That Steve Jobs saw himself in this light (and such august company) is neither shocking nor unjustified. The author of the book, Chrisann Brennan, was Steve Jobs' high school sweetheart from his hippy days in the early 70s. She focuses on their on-again-off-again relationship and Jobs's refusal to accept parental responsibilities in this book. The author's crunchy and hippy narration makes the book's content all the more appealing to the readers. The author tries to uncover some unknown facts about Jobs' personal life and how rudely he treated his own family. However, it is very difficult to judge how much of it is true and how much is delusional. Nevertheless, the core message that the book conveys is that someone who is charismatic and an iconic character for the outside world might not be the same for the people who are close to him.
