Philippine man on Saudi death-row to walk free
A Philippine man who has spent more than 12 years in death-row in Saudi Arabia will walk free, after 'blood money' was paid to the victim's family.
year-old Rodelio "Dondon" Lanuza was sentenced to death in after admitting to killing a man, who he said tried to sexually abuse him.
The Philippines' Vice President, Jejomar Binay said Lanuza is expected to be released after the Saudi Government paid approximately $USD , to the victim's family.
"I am glad to announce that our landsman has been spared from the death penalty," Mr Binay said in a statement.
The remaining $, of the compensation sought by the victim's family was raised by Lanuza's relatives, he added.
The Saudi embassy in Manila confirmed the deal, saying in a statement that Riyadh "has paid the balance of the blood money".

Filipino on death row has only a month left to raise blood money
Joselito Zapanta, on death row in Saudi Arabia for killing his Sudanese landlord in , has been given one more month to raise the blood money needed to spare him from the death penalty.
“His chances are getting better; Mr. Zapanta might not be executed,” said a statement issued by the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) quoting Vice President Jejomar Binay, presidential adviser on OFW concerns.
Zapanta was convicted for killing his Sudanese landlord, Imam Ibrahim, over a rent dispute in Ibrahim’s family has asked for SR4 million in blood money.
Binay said that President Benigno Aquino III already gave a “substantial amount” for Zapanta’s blood money on Jan. 21 but that the amount was insufficient.
“First of all, the victim’s wife has not returned to Saudi Arabia yet. She is still in Sudan,” Binay said. “Second, we are still in talks with (Saudi) officials to help us to save Mr. Zapanta.”

An overseas Filipino worker in Saudi Arabia has been sentenced to death for murder and is set to be beheaded this week unless his family can raise over $1 million (55 million pesos) blood money.
Vice President and presidential adviser on OFW concerns Jejomar Binay said the government had written a letter to Saudi King Abdullah bin Abdulaziz Al Saud to appeal for clemency for Joselito Zapanta and give his family time to raise the amount.
Zapanta was convicted in for killing his Sudanese landlord after the man had allegedly demanded rent before it was due. According to reports, Zapantas employer failed to pay his salary and allegedly killed Salem Imam Ibrahim in self-defense when the landlord beat him.
Under Saudis laws or based on Islam, the punishment should be equivalent to the offense committed, and the accused may be spared execution if blood money is paid to the family.
