of series identified in petroleum. Of these series, the most commonly encountered are the paraffins, the olefines, the polymethylenes, the acetylenes, turpenes, and benzenes. Natural gas is composed predominantly of the lower-molecular weight hydrocarbons of the paraffin series. Hydrocarbons can be classified into essentially four categories depending on the structural formula. Two of the categories refer to the structural arrangement of the c
