    My as yet unwritten memoir is going to be called &#;Confessions of a Trial Lawyer.&#; I don’t know if they will be more interesting than St. Augustine’s, but they will be less mysterious than St. Patrick’s.  Until then, I briefly note a few relevant background facts.

    Early leadership:
    Twice elected President of the Student Senate in college, I learned how to debate opponents, choose winning political issues, and efficiently manage an organization of independent-minded representatives. (Today I debate opponents in court in every case, select themes to appeal to juries, and despise meetings that drag on and accomplish nothing.)

    Following Tom Paterson’s retirement from the University of Connecticut in after thirty years on the faculty, a symposium of foreign relations historians from around the country gathered in Storrs to honor the career of a truly extraordinary scholar, teacher, and builder of community. As the keynote speaker, Walter LaFeber of Cornell University, put it, should be understood as “The Tom Paterson Era in Foreign Relations History.” That was not an exaggeration.

    Tom’s propelled the UConn History Department into the front ranks of the nation in terms of the teaching and writing of foreign relations history. Paterson’s books quickly established his reputation as an expert on the Cold War and on U.S. relations with Latin America. He published Soviet-American Confrontation (Johns Hopkins, ), On Every Front (Norton, and ), Meeting the Communist Threat (Oxford, ), and Contesting Castro (Oxford), Paterson also edited highly influential books,
